Description
Runner in the Sun: A Story of Indian Maize by noted author D'Arcy McNickle (1904-1977) is a reprint of the long out of print young adult novel set in times long before Columbus in the Southwest among the ancestors of the Pueblo people. McNickle effectively employs oral tradition techniques in the telling of the story about a young man who finds a gift to bring to his people undergoing serious challenges both within and from outside their village. In addition to bringing a stronger strain of corn seed to his people, the youth brings the gift of peace and the hope for a better tomorrow following his quest among the Nations of Central America. Although this book was written in the midst of the United States government's policy of termination, the themes of the book remain relevant for today's readers. The book is accompanied by Apache artist's Allan Houser's sketches.
